The “Golden Canary” Diamond goes on display at Sotheby’s in Dubai

A fancy yellow pear-cut diamond, one of the largest known to date (303.10 carats weight), named the Golden Canary, will be on display in Dubai for three days until Wednesday October 19.

Listed among the largest cut diamonds ever reported, this 53.37 x 33.50 x 22.21 mm monster gemstone graded by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) in 2018 as a pear modified brilliant cut Fancy Deep brownish yellow with Internally Flawless clarity was actually recut from the famous Incomparable Diamond, a 407.48 ct Fancy brownish yellow diamond fashioned in the early 1980s by American cutter Marvin Samuels from a 890 ct rough stone found by chance in a dumping site in Mbuji Mayi, Democratic Republic of Congo, a country known for the production of large quantities of diamonds but with little gem quality production (mostly industrial grade).

Before being recut to its present weight, it was last seen as a pendant in a Mouawad necklace along with 91 diamonds totalling 230 ct, a masterpiece listed at the Guinness World Records in 2013.

This fascinating gemstone will be offered at auction by Sotheby’s New York on December 7, 2022.
